Soft face is a type of head used in a drum or cymbal stand to protect the instrument from damage. Usually made of soft, flexible metals or plastics, a soft face will not chip the material it strikes. When drums or cymbals strike each other, they often cause dents and chips to form. A soft face prevents that kind of damage by cushioning the blow until it can dissipate.
