- Hand rivet is a mechanical fastener used to join pieces of metal together, usually made from steel. A typical rivet consists of a head, a shaft, and a shank. The head is usually solid and the shaft can be either solid or hollow. The inner diameter of the barrel is in most cases smaller than the outer diameter of the shaft.
